Storm Chasers vs. Local Roofing Contractors: Don't Get Scammed

Category: Hiring a Contractor

After every Utah hailstorm, out-of-state 'storm chaser' contractors flood neighborhoods promising free roofs. Here's how to spot the scam — and why local matters.

After every major hailstorm or wind event in Southern Utah, a wave of out-of-state contractors descends on neighborhoods, knocking on doors with promises of free roofs and quick insurance payouts. They're called 'storm chasers,' and while a few are legitimate, many leave behind shoddy work, voided warranties, and homeowners on the hook for thousands of dollars. Here's how to protect yourself.

What Is a Storm Chaser? Storm chasers are contractors who travel from disaster to disaster, setting up temporary operations in storm-affected regions. They typically use high-pressure door-to-door sales tactics, often offering to inspect your roof for free and 'find' damage that may or may not actually exist. Many disappear within weeks, before any warranty issues can surface.

Why They're a Problem: First, they're hard to hold accountable. If your roof leaks two months later, they're in another state. Second, their workmanship is often substandard because they hire cheap subcontract labor and rush jobs. Third, many engage in insurance fraud — inflating claims, fabricating damage, or 'eating' your deductible (which is illegal in Utah). Fourth, manufacturer warranties typically require certified installers; storm chasers often aren't certified, so your warranty is void from day one.

How to Spot a Storm Chaser: Watch for these warning signs. They knock on your door uninvited (especially after a storm). They claim 'I noticed damage from the road' or 'I was working in the neighborhood.' They have out-of-state license plates. They pressure you to sign immediately, often using urgency tactics like 'I have a crew here today only.' They offer to handle your insurance claim entirely. They want full or large upfront payments. They have no verifiable local address or Utah license number.

Why Local Roofing Contractors Are Better: A local Southern Utah contractor like CNL Roofing has roots in the community. We live here, our families are here, and our reputation depends on doing right by our neighbors. We hold a Utah license, carry full insurance, and have verifiable history serving Iron, Washington, Kane, and Beaver Counties. When something needs follow-up — even years later — we're here.

Local Knowledge Saves You Money: Southern Utah roofs face unique challenges: intense UV, monsoon storms, freeze-thaw cycles in higher elevations, and high winds. Storm chasers don't know which underlayments hold up to our heat, which shingle brands are rated for our wind speeds, or which valleys need ice-and-water shield. Local roofers do.

The Insurance Claim Question: A reputable local contractor can absolutely help you with a hail or wind damage claim — meeting with your adjuster, documenting hidden damage during tear-off, and filing supplemental claims when needed. The difference is that we work for you, not for an out-of-state corporate office that's pushing volume over quality.

If You've Already Signed With a Storm Chaser: Utah law gives homeowners a three-day right to cancel for door-to-door contracts. If you signed under pressure and are having second thoughts, you may be able to cancel within 72 hours. Consult an attorney or your insurance agent for specifics.

What To Do After a Storm: First, document any visible damage with photos. Second, file a claim with your insurance company directly — don't sign anything with a contractor first. Third, get inspections from at least two licensed local roofing contractors. Fourth, only choose a contractor with a Utah business address, current license, full insurance, and strong local reviews. Fifth, never pay anyone in full before work begins.

CNL Roofing Stands With Southern Utah Homeowners: We're locally owned, family operated, and proud to call Cedar City home. After every major storm, we offer free, no-pressure roof inspections and work directly with insurance carriers to get our neighbors fair settlements. Call (833) 323-3280 — we'll be here long after the storm chasers have moved on.
