Fascia boards might not be the first thing you think about when considering your home's exterior, but they play an essential role in both protection and curb appeal.
What Is Fascia? Fascia is the vertical board that runs along the edge of your roof, covering the ends of the rafters. It's the board where your gutters are attached. Think of it as the finishing edge that gives your roofline a clean, polished look.
Protective Function: Fascia serves as a barrier between the outside elements and the interior of your roof structure. Without properly maintained fascia, water, pests, and debris can access the rafters and decking, leading to costly structural damage.
Common Fascia Problems: In Southern Utah, the biggest threats to fascia are UV damage, moisture from rain and snow, and pest infiltration. Wood fascia is particularly susceptible to rot if not properly maintained or sealed. Watch for peeling paint, soft spots, and visible damage.
Material Options: Traditional wood fascia requires regular painting and sealing. Many homeowners are upgrading to aluminum or composite fascia that resist rot, require minimal maintenance, and hold their appearance for decades.
When to Replace: If your fascia is warping, showing signs of rot, or pulling away from the roofline, it's time to call a professional. Damaged fascia can compromise your gutter system and allow water to penetrate your roof structure.
